Sculpture Projects - Wooden House and Metal Sword

Wooden House

The theme of this project was minimalism, and the material we had to use was wood. The idea for this project was a minimalistic house that had no function other than looking like a house. It has no furniture, the windows have nothing to block it, and the roof is unstable since there are only hinges and no other support. The idea for this wooden house was to make it seem like a doll house; it was supposed to look incomplete.

For this project, we had to use all the wood we were given and could not throw away extra pieces. I made sure to use all the pieces I needed, and if I had extra pieces, I gave them to my other classmates who needed more.

Metal Sword

For this sculpture project, the theme was prosthetic devices and the body; we had to make something we could wear on our bodies. The material we had to use was steel rods, and the machines we had to use were the welding tool, the grinding, cutting, and polishing tool, the bending machine, and the bolt cutter or metal cutting machine if needed.

My idea for this project was to create a sword. Before that, I wanted to make a corset and hoops for a dress, but I wanted to match it with some classmates, so I changed it to a sword. My classmates made a crown, mask, and wings.

For the sword, I had to cut the long metal rod into smaller pieces and place them next to each other to form a blade. The smaller pieces of the rod were cut at an angle to make it pointy, saving me time when I was grinding the metal down to make the sword sharp. I also made some stylistic choices for the sword to have space between the blades to make it look like it had three sections. After welding the rod pieces all together and making the sword pointy at the tip, I wrapped the metal handle with purple fabric to give the sword some grip so that when someone held the sword, it wouldn’t hurt their hand. The purple fabric was also used as a sheath for the sword so someone could wear it on their back.

The artist statement for this project will be in the artist statements section.
